Skin cancer removal
Melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer because it can spread throughout the body so it has to be removed before it spreads. Two other types of skin cancer basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma are more common than melanoma. They are not as dangerous as melanoma and spread only rarely but they do grow larger so delay in removing them makes them harder to remove them with only a minimal scar and even if they are unlikely to metastasise should still always be removed. For skin cancers that have not spread surgery may be performed to remove them and no other treatment needed however the more aggressive skin cancers such as melanoma may require extensive surgeries. Mr Ferrando can surgically remove cancerous and other skin lesions using specialised techniques. Treating skin cancer may result in scars and a good plastic surgeon should understand your concerns and explain the results and what your appearance will be afterwards. Mr Ferrando has all the experience to treat your skin to minimise damage and change to appearance. Some small skin cancers can be removed under local anaesthesia in day hospital. Others need more aggressive treatment. When deciding what treatment is best your surgeon will consider:
The type of cancer
The stage of the cancer
Treatment could include surgical excision cutting out the skin cancer plus some surrounding healthy tissue to ensure that the cancer is completely removed. This operation may be done in conjunction with a skin graft. Treatment could also be MMS or MOHs micro graphic surgery which is a specialist form of surgery used to treat non melanoma skin cancers when there could be a risk of the cancer spreading or returning or where the cancer is in an area where as little skin as possible should be removed such as in the face close to eyes or nose. Then there are curettage and electrocautery procedures which are a similar technique to surgical excision but these are only suitable where the cancer is quite small. There are also non surgical procedures that may be carried out to remove the less aggressive types of skin cancer and these are things like cryotherapy, photodynamic therapy, radiation therapy or the use of anti- cancer creams. If you are worried about any bump or lump that has grown in size is of irregular shape or colour please consult a doctor and do not ignore it.
