Reconstructive Surgery

Reconstructive surgery is, in its broadest sense, any surgery used to treat a wide range of conditions, with the aim of restoring function and normal appearance, as well as to correct deformities created by birth defects, trauma or medical conditions like cancer.

Examples include congenital anomalies, cleft lip and palate repair, breast reconstruction following a lumpectomy or mastectomy for breast cancer, reconstructive rhinoplasty/septoplasty, tissue expansion, scar revision, skin cancer removal, permanent filler removal, blotched surgeries of various kind, gender confirmation surgeries and reconstructive surgery after burn injuries.

Recognised for his extensive experience and skill, Mr./Dr. Ferrando is often called upon to perform remedial/reconstructive surgery.

Mr.Dr. Ferrando M.D. is internationally renowned as he is also pioneer expertise in removal of permanent fillers as well as reconstructive rhinoplasty, breast reconstruction, and all types of reconstructive surgery.

What is reconstructive surgery?

Reconstructive Surgery is used to treat a wide range of conditions.

Reconstructive Surgery is all about restoring function and repairing people. It is performed to restore and reshape bodily structures affected by developmental abnormalities, birth defects, infections, trauma and injuries, tumours and disease.

With the use of reconstructive techniques, plastic surgeons are able to repair damage primarily through the transfer of tissue and cartilage (from the rib or the ear), from one part of the body to another. Their main aim is to restore the body, or the function of a specific part of the body, to normal.

With the use of reconstructive techniques, Plastic Surgeons are able to restore the function of a specific part of the body to normal, results which are achieved by repairing the damage primarily through the transfer of tissue and cartilage (from the rib or the ear), from one part of the body to the another.

Whenever he performs reconstructive surgery, Mr./Dr. Ferrando always takes great care to improve and restore appearance and he strives to minimise the visual impact of the initial wound or defect, and the impact of the surgery itself.

What conditions/problems can be treated with reconstructive surgery?

Reconstructive surgery is used to treat conditions which fall into the two following categories, congenital and acquired:

Congenital
Congenital conditions comprehend all of those deformities/malfunctions, that are present at birth. Congenital conditions that are treated with reconstructive surgery include:
•  Cleft lip and palate
Using local flaps and grafts, surgeons can repair the incompletely fused area of the lip and palate.
•  Vascular anomalies, such as birthmarks
Surgical excision, combined with other treatment options, are available for the treatment of arteriovenous malformations (AVM) and certain haemangiomas.
•  Otoplasty
Reconstructive surgery is used to correct all manner of ear defects; techniques include otoplasty for prominent or constricted ears. • Reconstructive Rhinoplasty is used to repair missing structure with cartilage graft taken from the rib or the ear and to reconstruct septum when needing to improve function and appearance.

Acquired
Acquired conditions are those that develop or occur after birth. They can involve accident and injury as well as disease and infection. Acquired conditions that are treated with reconstructive surgery include:
•  Burns
Patients who have suffered burns, would require the intervention of Plastic Surgeons, who are the primary clinicians involved in the resuscitation, surgical treatment and reconstruction of damaged tissues.
•  Cancer
Reconstructive Surgery, mainly excision, closure and flap reconstruction, is used to treat a wide range of cancer conditions, such as cancer of the skin, breast, head and neck and sarcoma. •  Infection
Following severe infections, Reconstructive Surgery is used to remove dead tissue and to repair the surrounding area.
•  Trauma
Reconstructive Surgery techniques are crucial to repair soft tissue injuries of the face following in trauma and injury.
The main techniques used by plastic surgeons in reconstructive procedures are:

Skin grafts
A skin graft involves taking a healthy patch of skin (known as the donor site) from one area of the body, and transferring it to another area where skin is damaged or missing. The piece of skin that is moved requires blood vessels to grow into it when placed in the ‘recipient site, therefore needs to be entirely disconnected prior to being repositioned.

Tissue expansion
Tissue expansion surgery is a procedure performed to promote the growth of healthy extra skin to replace damaged skin. This reconstructive procedure is an option for almost any area of the body and Mr Ferrando can repair skin that has been damaged by both congenital and acquired defects.
Tissue expansion has become more widespread particularly in breast reconstruction, burn surgery and paediatric plastic surgery. It is important to note that there are no non- surgical options for tissue expansion. The procedure is usually performed in two stages. The first stage is when an expander ( or ballon) is inserted underneath the skin and is inflated by injecting it with saline water or air. The second stage is when the area being treated is cut out and the the new expanded skin is used to close the hole. There must be full expansion otherwise there might not be enough skin to compete this second procedure. Sometimes the process can need repeating. The operations are performed under general anaesthesia and separated by a number of weeks to allow for sufficient tissue expansion. Once the expansion has been ultimated the results last a lifetime.

Flap surgery
Flap Reconstruction envolves the transfer of a living piece of tissue from one part of the body to another, as well as the blood vessel that keeps it alive. Flaps carry their own blood supply (unlike skin grafts), so more complex defects can be repaired using this technique. Flap surgery can restore function and form to areas of the body that have lost fat, muscle movement, skin, and/or skeletal support.
